Historic bandstand set to be restored
Published: Wednesday 29 July 2026
Work to restore the bandstand in Hamilton’s Bothwell Road Park has taken a significant step forward with the approval of funding.
Funds from both the council’s Local Action Fund and Outdoor Investment Fund will now allow the council to work with the Bothwell Road Action Group (BRAG) to fully refurbish the bandstand, bringing the existing structure up to modern standards while retaining its historic design and features.
Donated to the town of Hamilton by John Monteath in 1912, the bandstand has been a focal point in Bothwell Road Park for more than 114 years.
Adjacent to the town’s War Memorial and nestled between established trees, the children’s play area and the community sensory garden, it provides a dedicated space for a range of informal and formal events.
Councillor Davie McLachlan, Chair of Housing and Technical Resources said: “I am delighted to see this funding confirmed and the refurbishment now being able to be scheduled.
“This project is a good example of the council’s commitment to investing in existing community facilities and, at the same time, working closely with the local community as an integral part of the process.
“The restoration of the bandstand will ensure a part of the town’s history is preserved and will enable even more residents to enjoy it for many more years to come.”
Peter McGhee, of BRAG, said: “This is fantastic news and we look forward to working with the council to bring this wonderful structure back to its former glory.”
Officers from the council’s Housing and Technical Resources are now working to procure specialist contractors to begin the work, which is anticipated to start later this year.
The park and its other facilities will remain open for the duration of the refurbishment.
